This video explains the five fundamental categories of divorce: grounds for divorce, custody, child support, alimony, and property division. It highlights the difference between behavioral issues (grounds and custody) and financial considerations (child support, alimony, and asset division). The speaker emphasizes that while some aspects of divorce may seem straightforward, complex cases require careful legal analysis and strategic decision-making to ensure an equitable outcome for both parties.

Video Transcript:

I have given talks on this topic before. A divorce can be broken down into five key categories: grounds for divorce, custody, child support, alimony, and division of property.

Grounds for divorce and custody relate to human behavior and are not directly tied to financial matters. In contrast, child support, alimony, and property division are financial considerations. Child support and alimony are based on income and expenses, while the division of marital property functions similarly to a business balance sheet—assessing assets, debts, and determining an equitable division between the two spouses as they go their separate ways.

Each of these five categories contains numerous subcategories, making the divorce process complex and nuanced. If resolving these issues were simple, anyone could do it. However, in more complicated divorces, navigating these factors requires significant legal knowledge and expertise.
